Healthy Vending
Built to the Standard
Schools, hospitals, government facilities, and corporate wellness programs all face nutrition requirements that standard vending ignores. We build programs designed to meet the rules that govern your location—USDA Smart Snacks, NAMA FitPick, or your own wellness policy—at $0 cost for the machines.
USDA Smart Snacks in School
The national nutrition standard for competitive foods sold to students during the school day. We design school vending programs to meet these requirements.
Established under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, Smart Snacks in School sets minimum nutrition standards for all foods and beverages sold to students on campus during the school day—any sale that competes with the federally reimbursable school meal program.
The general framework is often described as the 35-10-35 rule: snack items must derive no more than 35% of calories from fat, less than 10% of calories from saturated fat, and contain no more than 35% sugar by weight. Calorie limits are 200 calories for a snack item and 350 calories for an entrée item. Sodium is capped at 230 mg per snack and 480 mg per entrée.
Products must also meet a "first ingredient" rule—the lead ingredient must be a fruit, vegetable, dairy food, protein food, or whole-grain-rich ingredient. This is separate from the nutrient limits and can disqualify an otherwise low-calorie item.
Beverage rules by grade band
- Elementary: plain water, low-fat/fat-free milk and non-dairy equivalents, 100% juice up to 8 oz
- Middle school: above plus calorie-free flavored water and low-calorie beverages, juice up to 12 oz
- High school: above plus beverages up to 40-60 calories per 12 oz (as defined in the standard), within caffeine limits

NAMA FitPick & FitPick Select
The vending industry's voluntary better-for-you labeling program, used beyond K-12 to help any buyer meet internal wellness or procurement standards.
FitPick is the National Automatic Merchandising Association's healthy-vending labeling program. It identifies better-for-you products at the machine so consumers can make an informed choice without reading a nutrition panel.
The program uses a tiered structure: the FitPick tag marks products that clear defined thresholds for calories, fat, saturated fat, sodium, and sugar. FitPick Select identifies items that go further—lower calorie density, cleaner ingredients, or additional nutrient criteria—for buyers with stricter internal benchmarks.
FitPick is commonly used by corporate wellness programs, universities, hospitals, and government facilities that want a recognized, easy-to-audit labeling system without the compliance machinery of a federal mandate.
FitPick
Meets defined limits for calories, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, sodium, and sugar. Displayed prominently in the machine so shoppers spot better-for-you choices at a glance.
FitPick Select
A higher tier for products with additional nutritional merit—lower calorie density, more fiber, less sodium—suited to facilities with strict internal wellness benchmarks.
Visual merchandising
Color-coded shelf labels, star stickers, and front-of-machine signage let your employees or students identify compliant products without any nutrition literacy required.
Procurement alignment
Many government and healthcare RFPs now reference NAMA FitPick thresholds. We can document compliant product percentages to support your procurement response.
Regulated Buyers Who Need Compliant Vending
If your facility faces a nutrition mandate, wellness policy, or procurement requirement, we build the program around your specific standard.
K-12 Schools & Districts
Federal USDA Smart Snacks compliance required during the school day. We design K-12 programs to meet the full standard—snacks, entrées, and grade-specific beverage rules—and maintain them as regulations update.
Universities & Colleges
Campus wellness policies and sustainability commitments increasingly require a minimum percentage of better-for-you products. We build compliant programs for dining halls, residence halls, libraries, and athletic facilities.
Hospitals & Healthcare
Healthcare accreditation bodies and internal policies often require that food sold on campus align with the institution's health mission. We curate product mixes that meet your facility's nutrition standards and support patient and staff wellbeing.
Government Facilities
Federal, state, and local procurement contracts can require a defined percentage of FitPick-qualified products in vending machines on government property. We document compliance for bid responses and maintain it through the contract term.
Corporate Wellness Programs
Companies with formal wellness initiatives, biometric screening incentives, or WELL Building certification goals use compliant vending to signal and reinforce a health-forward culture—while still giving employees the convenience of on-site refreshment.
Facilities with Internal Policies
Even without a legal mandate, many facilities have adopted internal nutrition guidelines for on-site food sales. We build programs around your specific policy—whatever percentage or criteria you've set—and keep the documentation current for internal audits.
How We Build a Compliant Program
Four steps from requirements assessment to a maintained, documented program. You approve the menu; we run the compliance.
- No cost for machines, delivery, install, or service
- You review and approve every product before it loads
- We keep the program current when standards or formulations change
- One point of contact across all 50 states and multi-site accounts
Assess your requirements
We start with the standards that govern your location—USDA Smart Snacks for K-12, state or district wellness policy add-ons, NAMA FitPick tiers for other regulated buyers, or your own internal wellness benchmark. You tell us the rules; we map the gaps.
Curate a compliant product mix
We build a product list that clears every relevant limit—calorie, fat, saturated fat, sodium, and sugar thresholds as written in the applicable standard. You review and approve the full menu before a single item loads into the machines.
Label and merchandise for clarity
Better-for-you products are identified at the machine using visual cues—color-coded labels, shelf placement, or NAMA FitPick-style tagging—so buyers can choose well without reading a nutrition panel. Compliant items are front and center.
Report and maintain compliance over time
Product lines change. We track your planogram against current standards and flag any item that falls out of compliance when formulations shift or regulations update. One point of contact keeps the program current so you do not have to audit it yourself.
The Case for Compliant Vending
Meeting a nutrition standard and running a useful vending program are not in conflict. Here's what a well-built compliant program delivers.
Meets procurement requirements
Government, healthcare, and institutional RFPs increasingly specify a minimum percentage of better-for-you products. A documented compliant program helps you satisfy the requirement without managing it yourself.
Healthier students and employees
When better-for-you options are available, labeled, and merchandised prominently, people choose them more often. Access to compliant choices during the day supports the nutrition goals your facility has already set.
Revenue and commissions are still possible
A healthier product mix does not mean zero revenue. Better-for-you categories have grown steadily in vending, and a well-curated compliant machine can generate commission alongside meeting your standards.
Reduces compliance burden on your staff
We maintain the planogram against current standards and flag changes when regulations update or product formulations shift. Your team approves the list—it does not audit it.
Supports wellness initiatives
Vending that aligns with your wellness program, biometric screening, or WELL Building goals is a visible, daily touchpoint—not a once-a-year benefits communication. It signals the culture you're building.
One vendor for all 50 states
Multi-site districts, health systems, and national employers get consistent compliance standards, one point of contact, and one invoice—regardless of how many locations or states are involved.
Questions about healthy vending compliance
What is USDA Smart Snacks in School?
USDA Smart Snacks in School is a federal nutrition standard established under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. It sets limits on the snacks and beverages that can be sold to students on campus during the school day. The general nutrient guidelines require that snack items derive no more than 35% of their calories from fat, less than 10% from saturated fat, and contain no more than 35% sugar by weight. Calorie limits are 200 calories for snacks and 350 calories for entrée items. Sodium is capped at 230 mg per snack (200 mg after July 2016) and 480 mg for entrées. Items must also meet a "first ingredient" rule, meaning the first ingredient must be a fruit, vegetable, dairy, protein food, or whole-grain-rich ingredient. Beverage rules vary by grade band: elementary schools may offer water, low-fat milk, and 100% juice (up to 8 oz); middle and high schools can also offer no-calorie flavored water and certain sports drinks within defined limits.
What is NAMA FitPick?
FitPick is the National Automatic Merchandising Association's voluntary healthy-vending labeling program for products sold outside of the school environment. It identifies better-for-you items at the machine using a tiered system—FitPick and FitPick Select—so consumers can easily spot lower-calorie, lower-fat, lower-sodium choices without studying a nutrition label. FitPick is widely used by operators serving corporate campuses, healthcare facilities, government buildings, and universities that want to meet internal wellness or procurement standards without a legally mandated framework.
Can vending still be profitable if it is healthy?
Yes. Better-for-you products have grown consistently as a share of vending sales, and modern cashless machines allow us to merchandise compliant items prominently so they move. Commission and revenue sharing are still possible with a healthy program—the unit economics depend on location, volume, and product mix, and we discuss realistic expectations during your consult rather than promising a number that does not match your footprint.
Do you handle K-12 beverage rules?
Yes. The Smart Snacks beverage standards differ by grade band. Elementary schools are limited to water, plain and flavored low-fat or fat-free milk (including non-dairy), and 100% juice in portions up to 8 oz. Middle and high schools have those options plus calorie-free and low-calorie flavored water and certain other beverages within defined calorie and caffeine limits. We build the correct beverage rules into your planogram at setup and keep them current when standards update.
Do you serve facilities outside of K-12 schools?
Yes. We build compliant programs for K-12 districts and universities, hospitals and healthcare campuses, government facilities with procurement nutrition requirements, and corporate wellness programs with internal nutrition policies. The applicable standard differs by setting, and we design each program around the rules that actually govern your location.
Does AVG hold a USDA or NAMA certification?
We do not represent that we hold a specific government certification. What we do is build vending programs designed to meet the published USDA Smart Snacks standards, NAMA FitPick criteria, and your facility's own wellness policy. You review and approve the compliant product list before launch, and we maintain it against the current standards going forward.
